J.R. Powell

James "JR" Robert Powell (74) of Hadley, PA passed away at UPMC Greenville on Wednesday, August 11 with his family by his side.

He was born in Mercer, PA on April 26, 1947 to Katherine (Kasbee) and James H. Powell. He attended Commodore Perry School District. Early in life he was employed by Bessemer Railroad, started J.R. Powell and Sons Construction and in 1996 opened Greystone Country Estates.

On July 5, 2008 he married the love of his life, Monica (Lauffer), she survives.

J.R. enjoyed spending time with his sons and family, gator rides with his beloved grandchildren, and interacting with the residents of Greystone Country Estates. He was a man of his word and often shared his wisdom and quick wit with all that had the pleasure of knowing him. 

J.R. is survived by his wife, Monica; sons Rob Powell and his wife Jamie of Hadley, PA, Jess Powell and his wife Danielle of Greenville, PA, Tyler Shook and his wife Kayla of Norfolk, VA, Kyle Shook and his wife Jen of Greenville, PA, Luke Shook and Donald Smith of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter in law, Christine Hery of Menlo Park, CA; sisters, Linda & David Cook of Mercer, PA, Beverly & Larry McCloskey of Hadley, PA, Janet & Charles Shilling of Greenville, PA, Brenda & Bill Weiss of Bloomfield, OH, Brother Bill & Mary Powell of Greenville, PA, Glen & Diane Powell of Fredonia, PA, and Gary & Ellie Powell of Masury, OH, grandchildren, Jesse, Jordan and Kaitlin Powell, Christian & Chole Powell, Sydnie, Sophie & Craigen Powell, Annabeth & Olivia Shook, Kennedy Shook, Nick Brown and great grandson Lex Powell.

He is preceded in death by his parents and son Craig D. Powell.

He will so incredibly be missed by all who knew him and especially by those who loved him.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville.  Family and friends may call on Friday, August 13, 2021 at the funeral home from 2:00 –4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm.  He will be laid to rest at the Hadley Cemetery.  Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.snyderfh.com

The family has suggested that memorial tributes may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
