David C. Shields, formerly of Cochranton (Greenwood Twp.) passed away on Saturday morning, April 25, 2020 at the Wesbury Retirement Community, Meadville where he had been a resident. He was 82.
David was born in Meadville on April 14, 1938 a son of the late David Leslie and Osee Grace (Jewell) Shields. Following the death of his father, he was raised by his stepfather, Fred Weaver. On June 24, 1961 he married the former Betty L. Gorby who preceded him in death on December 29, 2019.. He had been employed with the railroad for 25 years and then went onto work for the Greenwood Twp. Maintenance Department for an additional 17 years.
David was an active member of the Reash Community Church where he always enjoyed participating in the many church activities and events. He and his wife were avid travelers having visited 48 on the 50 states and always enjoyed socializing with others at the many family and church activities and gatherings and always very appreciative of those who would visit him at the Wesbury Retirement Community.
He loved his trucks, his many tractors and operating a butcher shop from the basement of the family home. He enjoyed tending to his garden and taking care of his lawn.
He is survived by two sons, David “Burr” Shields, Meadville and Dale Shields and his girlfriend, Linda, Cochranton; two daughters, Donna Roberts and her husband Charles, Hadley and Dixie Mast and her husband Clarence “Slim” of Hadley; 2 sisters, Eva Harvey, Guys Mills and Bonnie Steinoff, Stockton, NY.; 1 grandson, Drew Mast, Hadley and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father; his wife; two sisters, Norma Orians and Lulu Weaver.
Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, private family services will be held. The service will be live-streamed at https://www.facebook.com/snyderfh on Tuesday, April 28th at 1 pm with Randy Keeling, Senior pastor of the Reash Community Church officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at the Greendale Cemetery.
