Ruby Mae Gurnee

Ruby Mae Gurnee, 99, of Wesbury United Methodist Community – Town Square of Grace Health Center since March, 2011, passed away on November 22, 2019. She was born September 2, 1920 in Plumville, PA to Brady Myers and Nettie Keener Myers. 

After graduating from Plumville High School, she married Richard E. Gurnee on April 5th, 1941. They had 3 children: Ruby Louise, R. James and Tamara Sue.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband in 1992, her parents, her brother Jim Myers and her 2 sisters Charlotte Myers and Helen Boughner McIntosh. She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Louise (Keith) Mattocks, of Texas; her son, Jim (Mary Lou) of Meadville, PA; her youngest daughter, Tamara Sue (Marc) Cohen, of Texas plus 5 grandchildren (Beth Gurnee of Meadville, Rev. Byron Gurnee of Albion, PA, Rick Mattocks, Keith “Shorty” Mattocks and Summers Scoggins of Texas), several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

After her daughter Ruby Louise was born in 1942, Ruby attended Transylvania Bible College for a year.

Ruby lived in the Meadville area from 1951 until 1967 and worked many places in Meadville: Flickinger’s Nursing Home, Westinghouse, Masons, and Conser Petroleum Products, plus for 5 years she was the manager of Graham Self Storage in Arlington, Texas which had close to 500 units. After coming back to Pennsylvania in 1993, she lived in the Shryock Senior Apartment building and worked part time at Meadville’s Free Clinic until the age of 89.

Ruby was a member of the Meadville Wesleyan Methodist Church.

She loved to crochet afghans and to read books. While living at Shryocks she often would get 20 to 25 books out of the library at a time.

Ruby had excellent care at Wesbury to the very last day. Many of the staff had affectionate nicknames for her and had fun bantering with her.

She almost reached her goal to be 100 years old.

A Memorial service officiated by her grandson, Rev. Byron Gurnee, will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the Meadville Wesleyan Methodist Church, 836 N Main St, Meadville, PA. Pastor Tim Stafford will assist in the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Meadville Wesleyan Methodist Church or to the Gideons International, PO Box 349, Meadville, PA 16335. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville.
