Gordon B. “Gordie” Murdock, Jr., 70, of Cochranton, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 17, 2019, at Arista Care, Park Avenue, Meadville, surrounded by family. Gordie was born on November 12, 1948, in Meadville, the first-born child of Gordon B. Murdock, Sr. and Ida (Brown) Murdock. He graduated from Conneaut Lake High School with the class of 1966. After high school, he immediately began working for Erie-Lackawanna/Conrail in the car shop as a train car mechanic and welder, retiring after thirty years with the railroad. In addition, he enlisted in the PA National Guard, serving from 1968-1974, achieving the rank of sergeant.
Gordie was always involved in public service and served in a number of capacities throughout the years. He was a volunteer fireman for Greenwood Township, advancing to fire chief for several years and assistant fire chief for Cochranton Fire Department for several years as well. Gordie was actively involved in Crawford County Emergency Medical Services, working primarily with Conneaut Lake and Cochranton Ambulance Services. He served as an EMT for Conneaut Lake Ambulance for 21 years (seven consecutive three-year certifications). He instructed Crawford-Venango Fire School and taught CPR and advanced emergency classes through the Red Cross. He remained active in several associations throughout the years, serving as secretary/treasurer of Crawford County Fireman’s Association, and as secretary of Crawford County Fire Chief’s Association. He served as Greenwood Township Supervisor as well. When his children were young, he coached youth baseball in Greenwood Township. More recently, Gordie was a member of the Meadville Moose Lodge, where he served as past treasurer. He was also a current social member of Vernon Central Fire Department.
Gordie had a number of hobbies, interests, and skills. From an early age, he showed an interest in cars, tools, and mechanics, and as an adult, he became an avid race car fan. He worked as a pit crew member for a number of local racers throughout the years and loved attending races with his friends. He enjoyed passing his knowledge to others and coaching them in the art of mechanics. If there was a mechanical problem, Gordie could fix it!
He always loved the outdoors and with hunting camaraderie of members of his family and a number of friends, he developed a passion for deer hunting . In addition to his interests and hobbies, Gordie was a social guy and enjoyed hanging out at Aunt Bee’s with his family and friends, especially the “good ole boys”. His presence, skills, sense of humor, and laughter will be greatly missed.
Gordie was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Geneva, PA.
