George Alter, a resident of the Crawford County Care Center formerly of Greenwood Twp. went home to his Lord and Savior on Saturday afternoon, August 24, 2019. He was 90.
George was born in Allegheny County of May 15, 1929 a son of the late John N. and Florence A. (Brocklehurst) Alter. On June 16, 1951 he married the former Donna Lee Hall who survives. He had been employed by REA, Cambridge Springs as a journeyman lineman and had retired following 18 years of service. George was a member of the Allida Smith Wesleyan Methodist Church, Meadville where he was the song leader not only at his local church but throughout the region at the many camp meetings and churches that he and his wife would attend. He was a talented and self taught musician having learned to play the guitar along with many other instruments including the spanish guitar, the bass guitar, the harmonica, the accordion and the musical saw.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Donna Lee, he is survived by a daughter in law, Sherry Alter, Conneautville; two brother in laws, Robert “Bob” Vogt, Cochranton and Norman Kashner, Franklin; 2 granddaughters and two great grandsons along with several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Cary L. Alter; a brother, Robert J. Alter, Jr. and two sisters, Eleanor Vogt and Jenny Lou Kashner.
The funeral service for Mr. Alter will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 3223 Perry Hwy, Sheakleyville. He will be laid to rest at the Geneva Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
