Gene Greathouse

June 10, 1931 ~ July 26, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Gene Greathouse, of Greenville, (Hempfield Twp.) formerly of Perry Twp. passed away July 26 at the UPMC - Horizon, Greenville, surrounded by his loving family.  He was 86.

Gene was born in Spencer, WV, on June 10, 1931, to Otho and Blanche.  He married Lois Patterson July 10, 1954, at the Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church, Sandy Lake.

He graduated from Uniontown High School, Uniontown, Ohio, where he enjoyed playing basketball & football.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He and his twin brother, Glen, served aboard the destroyer USS Ingraham DD694 during a tour in Korea serving as Shore Bombardment and Plain Guard Duty.

Gene spent many years as a Master builder of homes and worked for Ryan Homes as a subcontractor for 9 years.  He worked for McKeever Environmental Center as maintenance supervisor for his last 19 years of employment.  After retirement he enjoyed working at Adesa Auto Auction in Jackson Center for 11 years. Gene’s sense of caring and concern for others was evidenced through his building and construction of many wheel chair ramps and rehabilitation equipment for those in the community with disabilities.

Gene enjoyed working as Assistant Boy Scout leader during the years his sons were involved in scouting.

In 1974 he committed his life to the Lord.  He served as a Trustee at the Wesleyan Church for a number of years.  In 1985 he was the Contractor for the Countryside E.C. Church and attended for 25 years.  He was a member of the Oak Grove Church. 

In the 80’s he made 3 missions trips to Haiti with CSI Ministries of Indiana.  His work teams were involved with building new churches o each trip.  He was joined by Lois for 2 mission trips.

He loved to attend his sons’ wrestling matches and his grandkids’ school and sports activities.  He was a loving, attentive husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his family, friends, and church.  He was a great “fix-it” man.  He could repair things that others would throw away.  He was always willing to help anyone that needed something done.  He enjoyed camping with family and friends and woodworking in his shop.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, one brother, Daniel Greathouse (Kay) of Akron, OH, sister-in-law, Iris Greathouse of Akron, OH, one daughter, Linda Ratliff of Winston-Salem, NC, three sons, Gary Greathouse (Patty), Mark Greathouse (Sharon), Randy Greathouse (Andrea) all of Hadley, nine grandchildren, Sherry Lineman (Justin) of Linwood, NC, Melissa Oakes (Justin) of Sandy Lake, Gabriel Greathouse (Kayla) of Sandy Lake, Shannon Greathouse, Amber Greathouse, Jordan Greathouse, Travis Greathouse, all of Hadley, Parker Greathouse of Erie, and Kelsey Greathouse of Hadley, two great grandchildren Noah and Liam Greathouse of Sandy Lake, two step grandchildren Chelsea Hart (Brian) of Cochranton, and Brandon Laudenslager, and one step great granddaughter Kendra Hart of Cochranton.

He is preceded in death by his parents Otho and Blanche Greathouse, his twin brother Glen Greathouse, sister Elouise Schrader, brother-in-law George Schrader, granddaughter Elizabeth Greathouse, and son-in-law Terry Ratliff.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 4:00 pm at the Oak Grove Church, 10 Oak Grove Road, Mercer with Rev. Randy Ritchey, pastor of the church officiating where Military Honors will be accorded by members of the U.S Naval Mid Atlantic Honor Guard.  The interment will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake,

Family and friends may call at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville on Saturday from 1:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 -8:00 pm and on Sunday at the church from 3:00 -4:00 pm.

The family has suggested that memorial tributes be made to the Oak Grove Church, 10, Oak Grove Road, Mercer, Pa. 16137 or to Bill Rudge Ministries, 280 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, Pa. 16148
