Donald M. Unangst

June 9, 1927 ~ July 16, 2016 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Donald M. Unangst, 339 E. Jamestown Road, formerly of Delaware Twp. and Hermitage, passed away at 11:35 pm on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Villa’s at St,. Paul’s Home. He was  89.

He was born in Warren, PA on June 9, 1927 a son of the late Owen L. and Lena Rose (McCracken) Unangst.  He was a 1945 graduate from Warren High School and attended Penn State after having served 18 months with the U.S. Navy operating a landing craft in Shanghai, China.

On November 24, 1949 he married the former Lois J. Braham who survives.  

Don was a dairy farmer for over 40 years operating the family farm in Delaware Twp., at the age 32 he was recognized and received an award as an Outstanding Young Farmer.  He had served as the Bureau Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and had also been appointed to serve as the Pennsylvania State Director of Rural Affairs under the administration of President Reagan and President George H. W. Bush.  Following his retirement he worked part time as the Administrator for the Mercer County Ag Land Preservation.  He was an active member of the Jerusalem Christian Church where he had been an elder, taught Sunday School for over 50 years and sang in the church choir.  He was a member of the Fredonia Lions Club, a grange member and a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau since 1951. He was an active member of the Homestead Advisory Council.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, woodworking and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He was an active member of the Mercer County Republican Committee and in 2004 he and his wife were the recipients of the Mercer County Republican Party Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years;  a son Gary D. Unangst and his wife Paula of Sandy Lake and a daughter, Debra D. Theodotou and her husband Nicholas of Savanah, GA.; 5 Grandchildren; Heather Swartzbaugh and her husband Darren of Henderson, NV, Ashley Simpson and her husband Gage of Saratoga Springs, NY, Mackenzie Stunkard of Cottonwood, UT, Kaley Stunkard of Charleston, SC and Andrew Theodotou of Savanah, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry D. Unangst; a grandson, Kyle Stunkard and two sisters, Marguerite Fleming  and Katherine Hulings

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Jerusalem Christian Church, 560 Donation Road, Greenville with John Canon, pastor of the church officiating.  The interment will be at the Jerusalem Church Cemetery.  Family and friends may call at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 169 Second Street, Fredonia on Monday from 4:00 – 9:00 pm and at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 am to 11:00 time of service.  Memories and condolences may be shared with the family online at snyderfh.com.  The Fredonia Lions Club will assemble and conduct a Memorial Service at 9 pm, Monday at the funeral home.
