Rev. Ada (Dishong) Chess, 98, of Hadley (Sandy Creek Township) passed away at 3:12 am on Monday, August 28, 2017 at the St. Paul Home in Greenville. She was 98.
The daughter of the late Lemmon Bird and Mary Etta (Nicholson) Dishong, she was born on September 14, 1918 near Nanty Glo, Cambria County, PA.
Ada Dishong married Glen Chess on Sept. 16. 1952 at the Allegheny Conference parsonage in Titusville, PA. where Rev. H.C. Van Wormer performed the ceremony.
She was a member of the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church in Hillsdale, PA.
Rev. Chess was an ordained elder in the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Connection since 1947, she was the oldest chronological elder in the AMW Connection. Her pastoral duties began with the Pleasant View (Emeigh) AWM Church (1939-1945), Johnstown AWM Church (1945-1946), assistant pastor of the Nu Mine AWM Church (1946-1947), supply pastor of the Hubbard AWM Church (1954), and several years as a conference evangelist.
She is survived by her son, Roger and wife, Cam, Hadley; four grandchildren: Sam Chess, Michigan, Amy McLaughlin and husband Chris of Mill Run, Shawn Knauf and Robert Knauf and his wife Katie of Tampa. Florida; two great grandchildren; her sisters Elizabeth Douglas, Catherine Carpenter and Pauline Dishong; sisters-in-law, Alma Dishong and Jean Dishong; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rev. Chess was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Lemmon, Amos and Herman; and seven sisters, Frances Alison, Marie Baker, Izora Mackanos, Jennie Mae Degenkolb, Edith Decker, and infant twins.
Friends will be received from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the funeral home, with Rev. Michael D. Marshall and Rev. David Blowers officiating. The Interment will follow at the Stevenson Cemetery, Salem Township. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at snyderfh.com.
